The Beaufort District Collection, the special local history collection and archives of the Beaufort County Library, SC, recommends these links and materials about Harriet H. Keyserling. Born into a Jewish family in New York City, Harriet Hirschfield married a Beaufort born Jewish doctor, Herbert Keyserling, in 1944. Together they had four children. She entered political life as a Progressive Democrat at age 54. In 1974 Harriet Keyserling became the first woman elected to serve on Beaufort County Council. She served in the South Carolina State House from 1977 – 1993 and helped found the SC Legislative Women’s caucus. Her son, William, (aka “Mayor Billy”) followed in her political footsteps, as a state representative, city councilman and mayor of the City of Beaufort.
